ROYAL PENGUINS (Eudyptes schlegeli)

SIZE:

  • 26-30 in. (66-76 cm)
  • 12 lb (5.5 kg)

THREAT LEVEL:

Near threatened

DISTRIBUTION:

  • Macquarie Island

HABITAT:

  • Breeds on rocky slopes, beaches and in grass.

MARKINGS:

The only crested penguin with white throat and cheeks. Royal (and Macaroni) Penguins have orange, not yellow, feather plumes.

NEST TYPE:

Nests are built from pebbles and by scraping out some mud or sand, but many pairs are content to lay their two eggs on bare rock.

PREY:

  • Krill, squid

PREDATORS:

POPULATION ESTIMATE:

  • 850,000 breeding pairs
